By 2013, they had printed over 59055 lineal feet of wallpaper (much more than the printer was designed to produce) and it was well and truly pushing the limits. They were in dire need of a replacement, and soon.
In September 2013, Bryce and his girlfriend-turned-fiancée, Jen, eloped to Paris. They spent 16 days in the City of Love – which meant leaving Richard behind to run the printer in Bryce’s absence. They were in the process of printing more swatch books at the time, and Richard – ever the numbers man – did some quick calculations and wasn’t overly impressed with the figures he came up with. He was set for hours upon hours minding the printer – a destiny that he was none too thrilled to fulfill. Once again driven by the desire to be as commercial as possible, Richard recalled a throwaway line from a printer salesman in the weeks prior – “what you blokes need is a Dotrix.”
Richard quickly took to Google, trying to find out what exactly a Dotrix was, what they could do, and where he could find one. As it turned out, a Dotrix was a digital inkjet printer developed by Agfa that could print up to 104 feet per minute, capable of modular configuration for embossing, die-cutting, and a whole host more than the standard wide format printers available at the time. There were also only 10 in the world, most located in the Northern Hemisphere – but a solitary news article provided a gleaming shard of hope: a company in Australia had recently installed a Dotrix in their Sydney factory.
